Called to make Christ known,
Capitol Hill Lutheran Church is an active witness to members, our neighbors and
the Greater Des Moines community. Community programs
Preschool Bible Buddies
Preschool Bible Buddies is a
Christian English as a Second Language (ESL) program for parents and children
ages 3-4 years old, working together. Bible stories and a basic preschool
language-development curriculum are used. Classes are Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday mornings, 9:15-11:15 AM. Daycare is available for younger siblings.
Funded by an "In the City for Good" grant from the ELCA Division of Outreach
and a grant from the Capitol Hill Endowment Fund.
Family Literacy Center
This after-school mentoring program is held weekly on Monday and
Tuesday evenings, 5:30-7:30 PM. The
program focuses on middle school students and their families. The goals are to
raise students' grade point averages, decrease truancy, and increase parental
participation in students' education. Parents are also assisted with their
English and literacy skills. The program is staffed by Lutheran Services in
Iowa. For more information, contact Jill Stuecker, Lutheran Services in Iowa,
at 271-7418.

10, 2007, through October 2, 2007, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM Noon. Activities include sewing quilt tops and
tying quilts. Finished quilts are sent to Lutheran World Relief and Riverside
Bible Camp for their fundraising quilt auction. Bandages are made from strips
of sheets, rolled and sent to Global Health Ministries. Morning coffee provided. Bring a sack lunch.
Clothes
Closet
Located on the lowest level of the church, southwest corner of the education wing, the Clothes Closet volunteers distribute clothing and household items such as sheets, towels and kitchenware, free of charge. Volunteers from our church and
surrounding Lutheran churches manage this project. You can get involved by donating clean, useable clothing, especially men's and children's, shoes and household items, or by volunteering to sort donations. Donated items may be brought Saturday mornings, 9:30-11:30 AM. Donations are sorted Monday, 10:30 AM-1:30 PM. The Clothes Closet is open
to the public on Saturday mornings, 9:30-11:30
AM during the school year.
Food Pantry
The third Sunday of each month is
designated as Food Pantry Sunday. People are encouraged to bring non-perishable
food items, as well as hygiene, cleaning and paper products, to the church to
be shared with those in need. The items are donated to the Des Moines Area
Religious Council Food Pantry.
Central Iowa Shelter and Services
Members and friends prepare and share an evening meal at Central Iowa Shelter and Services, formerly
Churches United Shelter, 205 15th St., six times a year, every other month. The food is prepared at the church and transported to
the shelter for their evening meal. There is a restricted fund to which members can
contribute to finance the purchase of the food. There is always a need
for volunteers to help prepare or serve the food. Churches United Emergency
Shelter is a homeless shelter for both men and women, and sometimes children.
They provide food and shelter to approximately 130 people daily.
